Abell 2700 - Galaxy Cluster

The galaxy cluster Abell 2700 is located nearly 1.3 billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Pegasus. It moves away at 28,000 kilometers per second - that is 9.3% of the speed of light.

The brightest galaxy is "LEDA 1214930" with an apparent magnitude of 15.1mag and a size of 1.1' (arcminutes). With the known distance the absolute magnitude can be determined to M= -22.9mag and the true size to 420,000 light years. So the galaxy belongs to the class of giant ellipses.

In a 20 inch Dobsonian at a magnification of 270x the galaxy cluster can be seen quite nicely, even if the galaxies are only loosely scattered. In total 13 galaxies could be seen. A few brighter stars provide a nice contrast.
