M31-MGC5

"M31-MGC5" is a globular cluster in the famous Andromeda Galaxy and is located far from its core in the outer halo. In the sky, about 12 full moon diameters separate it of Messier 31, 5.8° to be exact. At a distance of 2.3 million light-years, this would correspond to a true distance of almost 240,000 light-years - so it is as far away from Messier 31 as the "Intergalactic Wanderer" is from the center of our Milky Way.

With a luminosity of 350,000 suns, "MGC5" is about as bright as Messier 13 in the constellation Hercules.

In my 20" f/3.2 telescope "M31-MGC5" is quite easy to see at a magnification of 270x and poses no problem with averted vision. The globular cluster appears fuzzy and gets brighter towards the center.

It is located between two very bright stars, which makes orientation much easier and also looks very nice. :)
