The star cluster NGC 2324 is located at a distance of 12,600 light-years in the constellation Monoceros (Unicorn). It was discovered by F.W. Herschel
a few days after Christmas in 1786.
The star cluster has a magnitude of 8.4mag and an apparent size of 8'. The absolute magnitude can be calculated as M= -4.5mag, which corresponds to
a total luminosity of 5,600 suns. With a diameter of 29 light-years, NGC 2324 is quite large. Its age is given as 430 million years.

NGC 2324 is a wonderful sight in my 20" telescope.
At 210x, around 80-100 stars of varying brightness can be seen. The star cluster appears roundish, moderately concentrated and well defined against the
surrounding star field. The star density is rather even, but hardly any brighter stars can be seen in the center. The background appears brighter - an indication
of many more fainter stars.
All in all, a great object for clear winter nights. :)
